Hadley, MA — Gregory M. Mish, 71, of Hadley passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with ALS. A lifelong Hadley resident, Greg was the son of John and Ann (Kostek) Mish and a graduate of Hopkins Academy. A talented athlete, Greg played baseball, soccer, and basketball. After high school, Greg attended Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, where he met his wife Leslie Killip Mish, and Boston College.
At Boston College, Greg played saxophone and clarinet in the marching band and made lifelong friends. After graduating from BC, Greg worked at the family business, Mish Potato and Produce Packers, for more than 40 years. Greg served on several town boards and committees, most notably on the Hadley Board of Health for nearly 30 years.
Over their 46 years of marriage, Greg and Leslie enjoyed many concerts, UMass hockey games, road trips, treating friends and family to dinner, visits to the Oregon coast, and spending time with their kids and grandkids. Greg was a music lover, voracious reader, and fan of all New England sports teams.
Retirement for Greg meant he was able to spend quality time with each of his 5 grandkids as they grew up. Together they built birdhouses, explored nature, and ate ice cream for breakfast.
Greg was generous in every sense of the word – with his time, his energy, and his heart. He was always willing to help a friend or stranger and never expected anything in return. Greg taught his children the value of hard work, the importance of family, and to never drive by something labeled “free” on the side of the road.
Greg is survived by his wife Leslie, his son Steaphan (Amber) of Southampton, daughters Katie (Ethan) of Hadley, and Courtney (Casey) of Westfield, his brothers Jack (Marilyn) and Jeff (Mary Ann) of Hadley, his five grandchildren Mason, Owen, and Aveline of Southampton, and Cole and Parker of Hadley, as well as many nephews, nieces, cousins, and in-laws. He was predeceased by his parents John and Ann Mish.
Greg was a devoted husband, father, and grandpa who loved nothing more than helping others and spoiling his grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by all of them.
The family wishes to extend thanks to friends and relatives near and far who came to visit Greg and offered love and support to the whole family. The family also thanks the ALS Association and Compassionate Care ALS. Their advocacy, empathy, and support were a beacon of light in dark times.
The family invites you to join them during calling hours on Monday, June 27 from 5pm – 7pmat Williamsburg Funeral Home 3 South Main St. Haydenville, MA. For the safety and health of family members, please wear a mask. The burial will be private.
Later this summer there will be a celebration of life for Greg at the Young Men’s Club in Hadley. The family will share details when available.
