It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Anna Lipsanos (nee Nikolakakos), who surrounded by her loved ones, peacefully fell asleep with the Lord on January 24th 2025. Anna’s life was filled with beautiful journeys both physically and spiritually. Anna was born in Potamia, Laconia, Greece, to Panagiotis and Vasiliki Nikolakakos in 1938. She immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1964, where she met and married her late husband, Leonidas ‘Louis’ Lipsanos. A few years after the birth of her first daughter, Kali, Anna and family moved and settled in Astoria, NY in 1968. There she would go on to have two more daughters, Vasiliki ‘Bessie’ and Demetra ‘Jamie’. Anna would spend the next 52 years in Astoria, amassing so many friends that she was called “The Mayor of Astoria”. Recently moving to Massachusetts in 2020 to be closer to her family, she enjoyed living the quiet, suburban life while holding her city life memories close to her heart.
Anna, from the very beginning, devoted her life to her family. She helped raise her four siblings: Vasili, Stiliani, Elias and Aggeliki and once she settled in Canada, brought them over one by one. She worked tirelessly cleaning office buildings and taking the subway home all hours of the night in order to provide her daughters with all they needed and desired. She was always a loyal friend, sharing words of advice and even critiques. Everyone that knew Anna could say she helped them in some form or fashion. Anna was generous, kind, and genuinely cared for everyone’s wellbeing. A staunch Greek Orthodox Christian, Anna instilled the love of God to her family and always led her life with compassion, piety and grace. Visiting the Holy Land (twice!) and St. Anthony’s Monastery in Arizona brought her a great sense of tranquility.
Anna is survived by her adoring daughters, Kali (Andrew), Vasiliki (Christos) and Demetra. Her heart beamed with joy and pride for her grandchildren, Anna Christina (Oraka), Theodore Andrew, Maria Anastasia, Leonidas Alexander, Anna Irene, Christina Despina, Marcia Marie and Kosta. Anna was also blessed to see the arrival of her first great-grandchild, Meli Bazunu, who would make her smile even on the toughest of days. She is also survived by her loving siblings, in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, we kindly request donations be made to the following charity who has been instrumental in supporting and comforting Anna and other ALS patients.
