To really understand why this tournament matters, it's important to know who John Welch was and what he stood for.
John was all about family, friends, and community. He was the most loving husband, father, friend, brother, and uncle—someone who always showed up when it mattered. He spent his career doing what he loved: teaching, working with the Boston Red Sox, and helping out at LoConte Rink in Medford. He also gave a lot of his time to our parish, always ready to help wherever he could.
John believed that life wasn't about being the best—it was about trying your best. That was his motto, and he lived by it every day. He encouraged everyone around him, especially his kids, nieces, nephews, and students, to do the same. He had a way of making you feel like everything was going to be okay, even in tough times.
In November 2016, everything changed—John was diagnosed with ALS. He faced it with incredible strength and courage, teaching all of us how to live with grace, even when things got hard. During that time, we were introduced to Ron Hoffman, the founder of Compassionate Care ALS (CCALS). Ron came into our lives with so much heart and kindness, asking simply, “How can I help?” He was there for us in ways we never expected, and CCALS supported us through every step of John’s journey.
This golf tournament is our way of honoring John and giving back to CCALS for everything they did—and continue to do—for families like ours. It’s about celebrating John’s spirit and helping others going through the same battle.

This May, I’ll be running the Providence Marathon in memory of my dad, Michael Lamoureux.
As many of you know, my dad fought a courageous battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). He was truly one of a kind—strong, kind, and sense of humor that is hard to find. Watching this devastating disease slowly take pieces of him was one of the hardest things our family has ever experienced.
There is still no cure for ALS, and it continues to impact more families every single day. That’s why I’m running in support of Compassionate Care ALS (CCALS), an incredible organization that provides direct support to individuals living with ALS and their families. They were a true lifeline for my dad and for all of us during an unimaginably difficult time.
Since losing my dad, running has become my outlet—my way to cope, to heal, and to keep moving forward. I know he would want me to continue living life to the fullest, and I carry him with me in every mile.
If you’re able please consider donating to support this amazing cause. Every contribution no matter the size helps provide care, resources, and hope to families facing ALS. Thank you for supporting me, honoring my dad, and helping make a difference.

Claire’s Climb will be held on Saturday, May 9th from 8 am to 12pm. Join us as either a runner or biker to celebrate Claire’s life and those affected by ALS. Claire's Climb is an annual event that is in honor of Claire Gormley Collier and Jon Blais. This year will include a special tribute to Norbert Galligan and Eugene Doherty. We will be doing what THEY would be doing and keeping their SPIRIT alive and within us. Participants will run or cycle hill repeats on a .5 mile hill with an average of a 7% slope. Each repeat will be tracked and our goal is to do as many as possible! We encourage participants to collect pledges for each repeat as 100% of pledges will go to support Compassionate Care ALS.

Simply the Best
This year I will be attempting a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail (AT). This trail traverses 14 different states along the Eastern United States going from Georgia to Maine spanning 2,197.9 miles.
The reason I am hiking the AT is because of my dad, Layne Oliff. He instilled in me the love of nature. He was an avid trail runner, hiker, cyclist and an all-around lover of nature himself. He was diagnosed with PLS in 2017 and ALS in 2020. He passed in April of 2025. Watching him lose his motor function and go from someone who can run, jump, and climb to being in a wheelchair was incredibly difficult.
My dad and I spent time talking about life, nature and the Appalachian Trail. Hiking the AT was on his bucket list but one item he was never able to complete. I decided that if he couldn’t walk the AT, I would walk in honor of him. We had many conversations about this, and now I am attempting this thru-hike to honor his memory and as a fundraiser for ALS.
From diagnosis, my dad spent much of his time and energy advocating for those with ALS. This hike honors both his love of nature and his dedication to the ALS community. I have chosen to have donations go to Compassionate Care ALS. CCALS is a great organization that provides the much-needed support for those diagnosed with ALS and their families. This support includes equipment, support groups, and education. My parents received support from CCALS, and firmly supported and believed in the mission and the important work of CCALS.
Please consider supporting me, honoring my father, and supporting those with ALS by donating to this worthwhile cause. Follow my progress here and on Instagram @bmountains_23.
