Obituary: Mary P. (Buckley) DeCaro

Published in The Gloucester Times, March 2, 2013

Gloucester — Mary P. (Buckley) DeCaro, 58, died peacefully Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers, with her family by her side. She was the wife of Sam DeCaro.

Born in Boston on June 2, 1954, she moved to Gloucester as a child. Mary grew up in Lanesville, where she made many lifetime friends, whom she treasured as family. She was a graduate of the Gloucester High School class of 1972.

Mary moved several times only to return to Gloucester where she felt her heart belonged. She was employed for many years as a bartender at the Village Restaurant in Essex.

A loving and devoted mother, Mary could often be found at countless soccer games, basketball games, the track, on the banks of the Charles River and the shores of many triathlons rooting on her girls. As a mother, she taught her girls the true value of life, love, and laughter and how to always be true to themselves.

Mary had a passion for life. She was a great cook and loved to entertain friends. She enjoyed great gatherings and good conversation, which often lingered long into the night. If anyone ever needed a friend for a laugh or a tear, Mary was always there. Friends were always an important aspect to Mary’s life and she loved them with all her heart. She loved going to beaches with her friends and family. She also enjoyed long walks near the ocean, and company was always fine, but nobody could ever keep up.

The presence and love of Mary’s Circle of Friends, best described as family, eased her suffering and pain with endless support and for that, her family is eternally grateful.

Mary loved her family and friends and will be greatly missed by her loving husband, Sam; their three daughters and their spouses, Christie Swett and Jennifer Royal, Katie Swett and Derek LeClair, and Jaime and Joshua Birk. She especially enjoyed time spent with her five grandchildren, Calum Royal, Annabelle LeClair, Indigo Birk, and the twins, Isla and Aisling Royal. She was also predeceased by her beloved “Auntie Ann” Sister Margaret Mary of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

ARRANGEMENTS: A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, March 5th at the American Legion, 14 Church St., Manchester-by-the-Sea at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to Compassionate Care ALS, P. O. Box 1052, West Falmouth, MA 02474. Arrangements are under the direction of the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester. For more information and to send online condolences, please visit www.grondinfuneralservices.com.
