Obituary: Daniel J. Light

Published August 2013

Sutton- Daniel J. Light, 45, of Stone School Road passed away at home on August 8th after a courageous, hard-fought battle against ALS commonly known as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”, a battle fought on his own terms.

Dan grew up and lived in Worcester until 1990 when he moved his family to Millbury and then to Sutton in 1995. He was a graduate of Worcester Vocational High School, and from there worked as a siding installer for his father until opening his own business. This business, D. Light and Sons Siding, served the greater Worcester area for nearly twenty years until closing its doors this past April. Dan’s success as he moved D. Light and Sons Siding through the business world could be attributed to his ability to connect with people and to deliver a superior product with pride and professionalism.

He will be deeply missed by his wife Dawn (Krals) Light, his beloved sons Daniel and Zachary, and his daughter, the light of his life, Jenna, all of Sutton. He also leaves his brother Michael Light, sister Cynthia Light, brother and sister-in-laws Debbie and Paul Morgan, Kenny Krals, Cindy Krals, Bob and Brenda Pastor, Tina and Daryn Barnhill, Tracy and Kevin Greene, Jen and the late Dan McCarthy, his father-in-law Dan McCarthy and his beloved mother-in-law Roberta Krals, his nieces and nephews Brent Light, Walter, Jason, Kaila and Shannon Morgan, Kenny Krals, Nick Granger, the late John Paul Sokol, Cortney and Bobby Pastor, Josh, Andrew, Justin and Ryan Barnhill, Kevin and Kelsey Greene, Ryan McCarthy, Brian, Alan, Kelly and Brooke MacDonald, and Elise, Jill and Katelyn Light. Dan also leaves close friends Shuffles, Al, Phil, The Butcher, Roger, Dick, and countless others. He was born in Worcester son of the late Al and Connie Light and is also predeceased by his sister Barbara who also suffered from ALS.

A passionate and devoted sports fan, Dan was never happier than when attending his children’s sporting events with his childhood sweetheart, his wife Dawn. Together they watched their son Danny play football and baseball at St. John’s and continue on to excel with football, currently playing tight end for Fordham University, they have cheered on their son Zachary as he competed in the Special Olympics, and they have supported their daughter Jenna in her track and cross country meets for Sutton High School.

He had a generous and giving spirit. Everyone found a helping hand in Dan; his kindness was not only shared to his immediate family, but to his vast extended family and to his extensive tight-knit group of friends. An example of Dan’s generosity can be seen last November when the Light family opened their home to the entire Fordham football team, coaching staff, and parents for a dinner.

The Light family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Colin Quinn and Nurse Practitioner Jodi Riele for their exceptional care and support that they have shown to both Dan and the Light family during this most trying time.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 13th at 10AM in Saint John’s Church 44 Temple Street Worcester. The family requests that everyone gather directly at Saint John’s Church for Dan’s funeral. Burial will follow in Central Cemetery, Millbury. Calling hours are on Monday, August 12th from 5 to 8 PM in Liberty Church 495 Hartford Turnpike Shrewsbury.

Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home 12 Hammond Street Worcester is directing the funeral arrangements.
