CCALS Volunteer Caregiver Program
Join our Innovative Caregiving Team
We are proud to announce the Compassionate Care ALS Cultivating Compassion Volunteer Caregiver Program. Our program will have two cohorts of up to 15 volunteers each. Cohorts will complete an application process, background check, education program, shadowing with a Compassionate Care ALS (CCALS) Care Liaison, pairing with one or more families, weekend training intensive, monthly check-in with peers and staff, monthly guest speakers and skill enhancement.
This volunteer program represents generosity of heart and a willingness to serve but also the courage to learn the CCALS way of care, which requires a deep inquiry into who we are, what inspires us and what limits us, and an intimate exploration of mortality. The education component of the volunteer program is extensive because the demands of living and dying of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and other neurodegenerative diseases are so complicated and exhaustive. Truly serving in the world of ALS is a significant undertaking and one that we take very seriously.
As a volunteer with CCALS, you will learn our relational model of caregiving and tending to people living with terminal illness based on the system developed by Ron Hoffman during his 24 years as the founder and executive director of Compassionate Care ALS. CCALS was born from the realization that traditional health care has left major areas unaddressed in the ALS community. Our model has been proven to serve the needs of the whole person, body, mind and soul, and to significantly increase comfort, fluidity, and joy amidst the chaos and suffering. Our training goes beyond the limits of traditional education with a vision to transform ALS care and end-of-life care for those who need it most.
As a member of our volunteer team, you will be intimately involved in the tending of our families. Your services will be directed toward the needs within our community, and will vary as those needs change, be it virtually or in person. You will be a part of our deep commitment to compassionate care, and as such, will be continually invited to learn and grow with us.
Thank you for stepping into this important work with us. Many of you know personally just how important the work of CCALS can be in the life of a family living with ALS. Your generosity as a volunteer helps us expand our reach and bring quality, holistic care to our community.
