Karen Marie (Tsacoyianis) Mey, 57, of Watertown, Massachusetts passed away on February 15, 2023, following a courageous battle with ALS. Beloved wife of Steven P. Mey, and devoted mother of Kristina Mey and Steven P. Mey. Loving sister of Dean Tsacoyianis and his wife Mary Jane, and Gary Tsacoyianis and his wife Rosemary. Also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and friends.
Karen grew up in Watertown and was the daughter of the late Theodore C. Tsacoyianis and the late Patricia Diomandes Tsacoyianis. She attended Watertown public schools and was a graduate of Watertown High School (1983) where she met her adoring husband, Steven Mey. Karen and Steve were high school sweethearts and celebrated their 30th anniversary last year.
Family was everything to Karen and was the center of her universe throughout her life. Her devotion and loving support of her two children was obvious to all who knew her. She loved nothing more than attending her son Stevie’s many sporting events, and her daughter Kristina’s countless cheer competitions. Karen traveled across the state and even to Florida and elsewhere for these events. Once stricken with ALS she continued to a way, along with her loving husband by her side, to attend Stevie’s college football games.
Karen and her mother enjoyed an incredibly close loving relationship full of laughter. They shared many interests, including their love for the beach. They spent many wonderful days together over the years sitting in the sun on their porch on Lovell Road, at Nantasket beach or on the beaches of Naples FL. Karen loved to sit at the water’s edge with her feet in the sand, a book in her hand and a smile on her face.
As her children grew, Karen joined the Chateau restaurant in Waltham in their business office. She was a valued and respected colleague who treated every worker, no matter their position, with the same respect and kindness. She developed friends who became like family during her 10+ year career there.
All who knew her, remember Karen’s beautiful smile, her easy-going nature and most of all her positive outlook. Karen was a gentle soul but had unmatched strength, which was evident as she refused for many years to let ALS stop her. Karen’s stunning dark brown eyes served her well as she perfected the use of her eye-triggered communication device, enabling her to participate in all conversations around her – including kindly interrupting her husband if he got something wrong, just like she always had.
Karen is remembered as an active member of the ALS community and was dedicated to giving back. She was recently preparing to conduct a demonstration of her communication device that would be recorded and used to educate other ALS patients. Karen never suffered self-pity; she was always more concerned with the plight of others.
Funeral Service on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at the Taxiarchae Greek Orthodox Church, 25 Bigelow Avenue, Watertown, Massachusetts at 10AM. Mourners are asked to go directly to the church. Visitation is on Monday, February 20, 2023 at the Faggas funeral home from 4PM to 8PM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations in Karen’s Memory may be made to Compassionate Care ALS, P.O. Box 1052 West Falmouth, Massachusetts 02574. Burial in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Watertown, Massachusetts.
