Mrs. Mary Katharine (Niewenhous) Gormley, 99, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2023 in her home in Greenwich, CT. Mary was born on July 1, 1924 in Mt. Vernon, NY, one of five children born to the late August and Mary (Kelly) Niewenhous.

Mary attended the Academy and College of Mt. St. Vincent in Riverdale, NY and later served as President of the Mt. St. Vincent Alumnae Association. For years she had leadership positions in the Women’s Clubs of both New Rochelle and Greenwich. She was on the Board of Directors at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Harrison, NY.

Mary will always be remembered as a woman of great faith and for her keen wit, graciousness, generous service to others, and her personal notes and cards. She was always active in numerous community organizations and was an avid reader of literature, current events and history. She enjoyed playing bridge and golf with her husband and friends.

She is predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Dr. Eugene Joseph Gormley, with whom she raised nine children in New Rochelle and Larchmont, NY before retiring to Greenwich, CT 30 years ago.

Mary is survived by her children, Mary Lou (George) Swanberg, Fr. Eugene Gormley, LC, Anne (Stephen, deceased) Daly, Gregory (Lynda) Gormley, Kathleen (Gary) Gutekunst, Philip (Nuria) Gormley, Lorraine (Michael, deceased) Lunapiena and son-in-law, William Collier. She is predeceased by her son, Fr. Stephen Gormley, L.C., and daughter Claire (William) Collier. She is survived by her beloved sister, Louise Niewenhous Grady from St. Simons Island, GA.

Mary was a loving grandmother to her 19 grandchildren and great grandmother to her 10 great grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, November 26, from 3-6 pm at the Coxe & Graziano Funeral Home, 767 E. Boston Post Rd, Mamaroneck, NY. The Funeral Mass will be held at St Augustine R. C. Church, Larchmont, NY on November 27 at 11 am on Monday. Internment will be private. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Compassionate Care ALS (https://ccals.org/).
