Susan Elaine (Callan) Cushing, age 79, passed away peacefully at the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center, Boston on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late David Cushing with whom she enjoyed 31 years of marriage until his passing in 2005.
She was born in Medford on June 22, 1946, and was the daughter of the late Thomas and Eleanor (Burgoyne) Callan.
Susan was born in Medford but spent most of her childhood in Tewksbury as the oldest of her 5 siblings growing up with her tight knit family before settling in Chelmsford, to raise her family and later moved to Walpole, to enjoy her retirement. She earned her teaching degree from Regis College and went on to pursue a master’s degree from Rivier University and spent over 30 years teaching in the public-school systems. Susan was a devoted member of the Catholic Church, an avid reader and loyal member of her book clubs. She enjoyed spending time visiting with friends and family and helping to raise her grandchildren, never missing the chance to be at a birthday celebration, dance recital or basketball game.
Susan is survived by her daughters Elizabeth Gulosh and her husband Jason of Ashburn, VA, and Cathleen Burman and her husband Eric of Medfield; her sister Patricia Kivijarv and her husband Hans of Lancaster; her brother Daniel Callan and his wife Carol of Tewksbury and her brother Kevin Callan and his partner Nancy French of Burlington; her cherished grandchildren Nicole and Mackenzie Gulosh and Cameron and Jake Burman, many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, cousins and friends who will all miss her dearly.
She was predeceased by her parents Thomas and Eleanor as well as her brother Thomas Callan of South Carolina.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026 from 4pm to 7pm at the BLAKE CHELMSFORD FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen Street, CHELMSFORD. A Liturgy of the Word Outside of Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at 9am at St. Mary Parish, CHELMSFORD. KINDLY MEET AT THE CHURCH. Interment will follow in West Chelmsford Cemetery, CHELMSFORD.
