WARREN — Richard E. Monroe, Jr., 80, went home to be with his Savior, surrounded by his loving family, Tuesday, December 17, 2024 following a 15 year courageous battle with ALS.
Born in Rockland, April 9, 1944, he was the son of Richard, Sr. and Priscilla McCaslin Monroe. Educated locally, he attended Thomaston High School before joining the work force to help support his family.
On October 12, 1962, Dick married his soul-mate and best friend, Linda Hooper, at the Rockville Chapel. Side by side, through it all, Dick and Linda built a beautiful life together, raising four children, operating a gentleman’s farm, and serving the Lord with multiple church families and several mission trips.
After working for a brief time for Havener Distributors in Rockland; he began in the building and construction field, working first for E.L. Spear, and later Albert Levensaler. After going into business for himself, he completed many beautiful homes in the area, worked on countless restoration projects and gave of his time working at Baptist Youth Camp and Alford Lake Girls Camp.
When he wasn’t working Dick kept busy tending the large gardens at his home, raising beef short horns and caring for his team of oxen. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved a good hunt. Deer hunting and moose hunting with his family brought many stories and memories. In 2018, even after ALS had claimed his ability to walk, Dick was thrilled to have shot a bear on a hunt with his sons-in-law (who were really like his sons) Jim and Jason.
The central theme and number one priority in Dick’s life was his family. Whether camping, traveling together for family vacations, spending time at their camp ‘The Shore’, island hoping in their boat, or telling his grandchildren stories about his past adventures, he loved nothing more than being surrounded by his loved ones. He was a big man with a big loving heart, quiet, dry wit and sense of humor whose passing leaves a hole in the hearts of all who loved him.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Monroe of Warren; his children, Scott Monroe and his wife Martha of Warren, Susan Holbrook and her husband Donald of Hope, Lynnette Oldroyd and her husband James W. of Warren, Michelle Luce and her husband Jason of Sebago; his siblings, Joan Harjula of Thomaston, Frederick Monroe and his wife Jean of South Hope, Charles Monroe and his wife Patty of Warren, Michael R.
