FDNY Lieutenant Gregory “Mickey” Hansen, 44, of Staten Island, New York passed away peacefully at home on May 13, 2025, after a courageous and arduous battle with ALS.
Born on June 13, 1980, in Staten Island, Mick lived his entire life in the borough he loved. He attended Curtis High School and later studied at SUNY Oneonta and the College of Staten Island. In January 2002, Mick proudly joined the New York City Fire Department, beginning a distinguished 20-year career. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 2019.
Throughout his service, Mick was recognized for his bravery and selflessness. He received two FDNY Medals of Honor for life-saving fire rescues and was a bone marrow donor, helping to save the life of a woman he would later befriend. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, he was deployed to New Orleans as part of a 16-member FDNY response team—just one of many examples of his deep commitment to helping others.
Mick was a true outdoorsman and adventurer. He considered fishing and hunting his spiritual practice and found peace in the Catskills and Adirondacks. He was passionate about sports, both as a player and a teacher to his children. He was a creative and proficient “firehouse chef,” and known for his love of cooking and his unexpected ingredients. He travelled extensively in South America and Europe and became fluent in Spanish along the way. Whatever he loved, Mick shared generously—with his family, friends, and community.
Above all, Mick was a devoted father. His greatest pride and deepest love were reserved for his two children, Amaru and Clara.
To say he was one of a kind is an understatement. Mick was loving and kind and brought joy, fun, and mischief wherever he went. He touched countless lives and will be deeply missed by many.
Mick is survived by his beloved children, Amaru and Clara; his wife, America; his devoted parents, Greg and Nancy; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Debbie and Matt, Becky and Mike; his nieces and nephews, Matty, Alex, Marissa, Owen, Anya, and Maya; his loyal dog, Pancho; his many aunts, uncles, cousins, countless loyal friends, and his FDNY family.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Compassionate Care ALS (https://ccals.org/)—an organization that came through for Mick in ways that are immeasurable during his time of need, and continues to serve others facing ALS and life’s most difficult challenges.
