GARBER, David Age 72, of North Falmouth, MA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 18, 2023.

Devoted son of the late Irene (Berger) and Alfred Garber, David was with his daughters, Ari and her husband Cedric Menard, Shoshanah and her husband Manny Ramirez, and his sisters Nancy Benjamin and Jody Garber, when he died. David is also survived by his grandson Ezra Ramirez.

After graduating from Sharon High, David attended Tulane University, where he attracted lifelong friends due to both his flowing, hippy hair, and his incongruously strict study habits. He then went to Tufts Dental School to fulfill his childhood plan of becoming a family dentist. David’s adventurous nature led him to travel the world. He lived and studied in Scotland, had a dental internship in Zaire, traveled across Africa, took annual trips to New Orleans for Jazz Fest, and lived a life full of international adventure. He settled in North Falmouth and opened his dental practice, which he ran for 30 years and was a beloved and engaged member of the community.

In 2009, David was diagnosed with ALS. Despite the cruel prognosis, David remained determined to make the most of life and moved to Israel to participate in a clinical trial with hopes of finding a cure. Upon his return to Falmouth, while continuing to live with ALS, he remained committed to the causes of ALS research and care for others living with the disease. A focal point of his life each year became David’s Old Silver Swim, organized by his loved ones in his honor, to raise money for Compassionate Care ALS. Before David’s diagnosis, he was an avid gardener, enthusiastic curler, and year-round ocean swimmer (including swimming from Falmouth to Martha’s Vineyard for his 50th birthday). He remained a jazz aficionado, and a kind and engaged father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to so many. David’s motto was to always live large and swing for the fences, and that is how he lived his life to the end.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 20, at 1pm, at the Falmouth Jewish Congregation – East End Meeting House, 7 Hatchville Rd., East Falmouth. Burial will follow at the Falmouth Jewish Cemetery. Memorial Observance will be at David’s home until 5pm, continuing on Saturday from 6pm-8pm and on Sunday from 2pm-5pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to David’s Old Silver Swim.
