Allen E. Galant passed away peacefully at his home in Westchester County, New York, on April 4, 2025, at the age of 75, following a courageous three-year battle with ALS. He died in the arms of his daughter and spouse at his bedside.

Allen is survived by his devoted wife of 36 years and primary caregiver, Maria Pia; his beloved daughter, Leah; his cherished dog, Simone; dedicated health care aides who provided support and comfort throughout his ordeal; Diana, Francy, Leidy J., Clara, Juan, Julieth, Monica and Clyde and a wide circle of friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Pauline and Sol Galant, and his sister, Juliette Galant.

A dedicated psychotherapist for over five decades, Allen committed his life to supporting the emotional well-being of others. Even after ALS left him paralyzed and unable to speak, he continued to see clients using an iPad and eye gaze-enabled speech device -demonstrating his unwavering dedication to care and connection.

Allen had a deep love for tennis and played regularly throughout Westchester County for many years. He built lasting friendships through the sport he so enjoyed. Born and raised in Queens, Allen was a big Mets fan, rarely missing a game since 1962. He also experienced many of the cultural milestones of the 1960s, including the infamous Woodstock Music Festival-though he left early due to the rain and mud, a memory that he loved to share.

Allen’s legacy will be the subject of an upcoming documentary, directed by his daughter, Leah.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Compassionate Care ALS (www.ccals.org). Allen’s life embodied compassion and advocacy-his legacy calls us to continue striving for equitable healthcare and disability rights.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
