Obituary: Susan Ann Kron

Published in The Boston Globe on Jan. 15, 2018

KRON, Susan Ann 67 years of age. Editor and a Gift to all who knew her.

Susan passed away on January 13, 2018 after a 5-year bout with ALS. Known to her friends and family as one of the funniest people they knew, even in her final days, Susan uttered quick-witted one-liners which would make even the dourest among us laugh out loud. With her humor came eternal optimism, unflagging energy, emotional intelligence, and clarity.

For over 40 years, Susan worked in publishing as an editor and manager at Inc., Moment, CFO, and in her final years, New England Home. She was known for her observant eye, crisp stylistic touch, and lighthearted and wise management style. From 1989 she was on the Board of Directors at Women’s Lunch Place and worked in the kitchen regularly until her illness made it difficult to continue preparing meals for women in need. Susan spent years as a gabbai at Harvard Hillel Worship Study Minyan, helping to run the services. She and her husband, Paul Schaffrath, enjoyed travelling to such destinations as Paris, Israel, and home-away-from-home, P’town, to name a few. Describing her life would be perilously incomplete, without mentioning “Bruce”. Susan revered Bruce Springsteen, going to upwards of 40 concerts in the U.S. and abroad. In her final years, she received backstage passes, resulting in beloved photographs of Susan with members of the band. Susan earned her B.A in English Literature at NYU, later receiving Certification to be a Montessori teacher in Vermont. After moving to Boston in 1979, she met the love of her life, Paul, an Art Director at United Marine Publishing. Susan and Paul went on to work together at Inc. magazine for several years. Through highs and lows, and through these final years, Paul has been by her side night and day. They wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Susan is pre-deceased by her loving parents, Wilmer (Yonnie) and Clara Kron, of Philadelphia, where Susan grew up. She is survived by her husband Paul, her children (Sara Greene and Megan Peterson) and grandchildren (Lars Peterson, Gigi Greene, and Leif Peterson). Susan is also survived by her loving brother, Dr. Lawrence Kron, who moved to Boston a few blocks away to help care for her, and her sister, Gail (Mark) Saifer of Philadelphia, as well as cousins, nieces and nephews, all of whom have been forever present and caring throughout her life. Also, in these final years, she was blessed to have compassionate caregivers, who lovingly became the fabric of her daily life. Lastly, SO many friends, more than most of us would have in five lifetimes combined. Her friendship was a gift to us all, and over these last 5 years, she taught us how to consciously enjoy and appreciate every moment our lives.
