HAVERHILL – Sharon E. (Mills) Smith, longtime Haverhill resident, passed away after a courageous journey with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) on Friday evening, January 31, 2014, at home.

Sharon was born on May 8, 1949 in Peabody, daughter of the loving Alice (DeJesus) Cyr, the late Jim Mills and survived by her step-mother Beverly Mills of Ridgway, IL. She has been a resident of Georgetown for the past 5 years and previously resided in Haverhill. She was a graduate of Pentucket Regional High School and Northern Essex Community College.

Sharon will be remembered for her infectious smile, her love of life and her welcoming personality. Over the years she was known for her gift of gab and her legendary dance moves. Sharon was also an avid Boston sports fan, enjoyed playing bingo, attending yard sales and was a member of the AMVETS Auxiliary. She had a special love for her cat, Missy.

In addition to her loving mother she is survived by her daughter Ann-Marie (Smith) Ginn and Michael Hughes of Bradford, her son R. James and Kerri Cartier of Groveland; her grandchildren Gabrielle Kaitlin Ginn, Alexander James Ginn and Zoey Grace Cartier; siblings James Mills of Ridgway, IL, H. Mathew and Susan Mills of Haverhill, Deborah Sotis and Jeff Turner of Bonita Springs, FL, Bernadine and Terry Clifford of Groveland, Albert Cyr of Rumford, ME, and Laurie Gordon, Salem, NH and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Even as her disease progressed and she lost the ability to speak Sharon was able to forge new friendships. Her family would like to give a special thank-you to her friends and caregivers including her sisters Bernie and Sue; Mary, Suzie, Ann, Lisa, Lacey, Sandi, Jill, Michelle, Kelly and Christina. Also, thank you to the Doctors and Nurses at the Mass General ALS Clinic.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 5, in the Driscoll Funeral Home, 309 So. Main Street (Rte 125), Bradford from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Catholic Funeral Rites will be offered at 7:00 PM. Relatives and friends invited.
