Maryelizabeth Bartel, 72, of Manchester, NH died peacefully on January 17, 2018 at Community Hospice House in Merrimack, NH after a long illness.

She was born in Boston, MA on March 7, 1945 to Paul and Mary (Stoker) Bartel. She lived in Chelmsford, MA and Manchester, NH for many years.

She earned a bachelor’s degree cum laude from UMass-Lowell and a master’s degree summa cum laude from Fitchburg State University.

Maryelizabeth worked as an investigator for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and as a licensed mental health counselor. She was a member of the Daughters of the Civil War and of a creative writing group. She was an artist, photographer, lover of nature and master gardener. She embraced life with vigor and could be found running, bicycling, hiking and spending time with her grandchildren, whom she adored.

She is survived by two daughters, Pamela Monsignore and her fiancé, Kevin Joy, of Amherst, MA and Maria Monter and her husband, Matthew, of Canal Fulton, OH; two grandchildren, Owen Ebbs and Kelly Joy; four siblings, Paul F. Bartel Jr. and his wife, Jeanne, of Chelmsford, MA, Thomas J. Bartel and his wife, Dongyi, of Gilbert, AZ, Louise Merrill and her husband, Keith, of New Ipswich, NH and Elizabeth Bell of Gilbert, AZ; her long time companion, James Swanson of Manchester; and cousins, nieces and nephews.

SERVICES: There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Catherine Church, 267 Webster St., Manchester, NH. A cemetery service is Tuesday at noon at Rural Cemetery, 149 Dartmouth St., New Bedford, MA.
