Jose Marques, 79 of Ludlow passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2016, surrounded by his loving family after a long and courageous battle with ALS. Born in Penalonga, Portugal to the late Bento Marques and Maria Domingues, he belonged to Our Lady of Fatima Church and was a member of the Gremio Lusitano Club in Ludlow, and served proudly in the Portuguese Army. He Loved spending time with family and friends, visiting Portugal, and attending to his garden and trees both here and in Portugal.
Jose is survived by his loving and devoted family, wife of 42 years Benvinda Marques, daughters Susana Marques, Bela Marques Machado and husband Vitor Machado of Ludlow, Lurdes Marques Martins and husband Fernando Martins of Portugal. Granddaughters Gabriela Machado, Nadia Machado of Ludlow and Carla Martins of Portugal. Grandson Jorge Martins of Portugal and great-grandson Rodrigo of Portugal. Sisters Alexandrina Marcelino, husband Fernando Marcelino, Benta Marques, late husband Mario Marques all of Ludlow, and Rosa Carvalheira, husband Amandio Carvalheira of Brasil. Many dear nieces, nephews, sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, great-nieces and great-nephews. Jose was a hard-worker and had many jobs over the years in Portugal, Brasil, and France. He retired from Hasbro, but his passion was being a tailor.
A special thanks to all of his loving nurses who cared for him with so much care and love. His wonderful helper Maria Esteves who was always by his side. Ron at Compassionate Care ALS for always being there for us, as well as Dr. Robert Brown and his staff of MassGeneral Hospital who always went way and beyond. Dr. Vinagre and his staff, Dr. James Berry and his wonderful team, Dr. Gaissert, Dr. Gigliotti, as well as all the medical staff at MassGeneral Hospital and Dr. Johnson and Baystate Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday September 29, 2016 at 9:00 am from the Ludlow Funeral Home with a Liturgy of Christian burial celebrated at 10:00am in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by entombment in Most Holy Redeemer Mausoleum at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Visiting hours are Wednesday evening from 5:00-7:00pm and in lieu of flowers please make donations in his name to: Compassionate Care ALS (Falmouth, MA) at info@ccals.
