Robert (Bob) Arthur Jerin, 73, of Essex, passed away September 12, 2026 at home after a courageous battle with ALS. Son of William and Marjorie Jerin, Robert was raised in Cheshire, Connecticut. Robert is survived by: his wife Beverly, his stepsons Michael and Matthew, his brothers William and Peter, sister Katherine, niece Hillary, nephews Christopher and Adam, and grandniece Nora.

Bob received his Bachelor in Science degree in Criminal Justice at the University of New Haven. He was awarded a Masters in Science in Criminology from Florida State University. He earned his Ph.D. in Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University. He was a professor at Salem State University, Appalachian State University, and the University of North Georgia. He founded the Criminal Justice Bachelor’s degree program at Endicott College where he acted as Chair of Criminal Justice as well as Professor of Criminal Justice for over 25 years.

Bob was a staunch advocate for supporting victims and their families. This advocacy was reflected in the authorship of three books, numerous articles and conference presentations on identifying, advocating for, and preventing victims. He was a lifetime member of The Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, The American Society of Victimology, The American Society of Criminology, The World Society of Victimology, Southern Criminal Justice Association, and the National Organization for Victim Assistance. He founded the victimology section of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences as well as the Victimology division within The American Society of Criminology. He was the Keynote Speaker for the World Society of Victimology. He received the Gerhard Mueller innovator Award by the Northeastern Association of Criminal Justice Sciences for his significant contributions within the criminal justice system as a scholar-practitioner. He received the John P J Dussich Award by the American Society of Victimology for his significant contributions to victimology in the United States and around the globe. His 20 years as a domestic violence advocate and fundraiser for the Healing Abuse Working for Change (HAWC) nonprofit organization was honored in 2025. He felt his greatest accomplishment was providing the education and mentorship of his students to work within the fields of criminal justice and victimology.

Bob embraced life. He loved to scuba dive, rock climb, golf, ride his motorcycle, boat along the Essex River and travel across the world. His greatest adventures included diving along the Great Barrier Reef on a live aboard boat, a walking safari in Kruger National Park in South Africa, walking the Great Wall of China and climbing the pyramids in Egypt with his stepsons. Yet he enjoyed the smaller things in life, too, including walking with his wife and golden retriever, Bear, in the woods and beaches on the North Shore, sitting on the deck enjoying a summer day, and playing marathon matches of cribbage with family and friends. He brought this love of life and determination to live every day to his fullest to even his most challenging days. He will be remembered for his devotion to family, his adventurous spirit, and his tireless advocacy for those in need. Bob was a force of nature who will not be forgotten.
