Michael A. Cooper, known affectionately as Mickey, passed away on September 4, 2026, at home with his family by his side. He was born on July 30, 1946, in Plattsburgh, New York, and lived a life marked by intelligence, selflessness, devotion to family, and a deep commitment to service.
He was the beloved husband of Sandra A. Cooper for 56 years, and together they built a life centered on love, family, and shared memories. He was the proud father of Elisa and her husband Dan Connolly of Marshfield, and Becky and her husband John O’Donnell of Roswell, Georgia. He was a cherished grandfather to Aidan Connolly, Marin Connolly, Grace O’Donnell, and Reid O’Donnell, and he took great pride in each of their accomplishments. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Martin of Dannemora, New York, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Sandy Denicore and by his parents, Merle and Beatrice Cooper.
He was a graduate of Dannemora High School in Upstate NY, where he distinguished himself as a standout trumpet/bugle player and athlete in basketball, baseball, and soccer. He was also the class valedictorian, a reflection of the determination and intellect that guided him throughout his life. He went on to attend Lehigh University, where he was a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity, and later graduated from Clarkson University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. His education and character prepared him well for a career defined by skill, dedication, and professionalism.
Michael worked as an electrical engineer for GTE Government Systems Corporation / General Dynamics for 38 years, where he was a manager in the Components and Circuit Design Division. He approached his work with the same steady focus and thoughtful nature that he brought to every part of his life. He also served as the Chairman of the G12 Committee, part of the Government Electronics & Information Technology Association (GEIA). He earned the respect of colleagues and friends alike through his quiet competence, integrity, and reliability.
He was a Vietnam War veteran who served his country honorably in the United States Air Force. His sense of duty extended well beyond his military service, as he remained active in his community for many years after retirement. He was a volunteer patient advocate and member of the Auxiliary at the Milford Regional Medical Center for approximately 15 years, giving generously of his time and energy. He also volunteered with the Salvation Army in Milford, helping install American flags throughout the region, a task he carried out with pride and patriotism.
Mickey loved to stay active and found joy in being involved, useful, and connected to others. He was a devoted father and grandfather who never missed an opportunity to support his grandchildren and celebrate their achievements. He was a steady presence at their events and games, offering encouragement, pride, and unconditional love. He also enjoyed the simple pleasure of sharing coffee with friends at Honey Dew Donuts in Milford, where many appreciated his smile, warm presence, and good company.
His greatest passion was time spent at Chazy Lake in Upstate New York. There, surrounded by family and the beauty of nature, he found peace and happiness. He loved boating, swimming, hiking, and watching sunsets over the water, listening for and counting the loons, and enjoying the quiet rhythm of lakeside life. Those moments at the lake became treasured memories for all who shared them with him.
Visiting hours will be Friday, October 30, 2026, from 3:30–5:00 PM in the Buma-Sargeant Funeral Home, 42 Congress Street, Milford, immediately followed by a prayer service and military honors at 5PM in the funeral home.
