Obituary: Lawrence A. Dugan

Published in The Boston Globe on Mar. 23, 2014

Dugan, Lawrence A. 61, of Somerville, MA, passed away on March 18, 2014 after a courageous battle with ALS.

He was born to the late Thomas and Anne Dugan, Jan. 23, 1953 in New York City. Larry was a fantastically devoted father. His children Brendan and Aeron Dugan, of Somerville, were the light of his life. He married Angel Cacciola in 2009. She partnered fully with him before and during his journey with ALS, and it was her attention, love and shared laughter that enabled him to take such joy in life over these years.

Larry graduated Magna Cum Laude from Syracuse University School of Law in 1977 and enjoyed a successful career as a decorated ADA in Nassau County NY and as a partner in the Boston Law firm of Morrison Mahoney LLP. He was an avid adventurer, exploring land and sea, taking joy in sharing experiences with those he loved. When ALS had deprived him the use of his body, he used his keen mind in a rare, remarkable, inspirational attitude of acceptance and gratitude. It is impossible to overstate the impact this has had on every life he touched. This attitude was also recognized by all the professionals at the renowned ALS Center at Mass General. They found it so significant that his and Angel’s picture was chosen as the banner for their website. http://www.massgeneral.org/als/ His annual Thanksgiving Gratitude list will be missed. In addition to his wife and children, Larry is survived by his siblings, Anne Lee, Skaneateles, NY; Thomas, Eden, NY; Robert, Melbourne FL; George, Las Vegas, NV; Joseph, Conway, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews in various states.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday April 12, 2014 at 11:00 AM at The First Church Cambridge, 11 Garden St. Cambridge MA 02138. Later this summer, according to his wishes, his ashes will be lovingly scattered in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of South Wellfleet where his heart belonged. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Larry’s memory to Compassionate Care ALS, PO Box 1052, West Falmouth, MA, 02574. www.ccals.org
