On Monday, April 20th, 2015 I will be running the 119th Boston Marathon. I will be running in support of Compassionate Care ALS, a cause that is very important to me. As most of you may know, my Uncle Doug was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis aka Lou Gehrig’s disease) in the fall of 2008. He met CCALS founder Ron Hoffman soon after. Doug joined the board and became very involved with the organization. He completed his battle with the devastating disease in April of 2013. His courage and positive attitude throughout those four and half years was and continues to be an inspiration to everyone he came in contact with.

One of Uncle Doug’s last wishes was that my family and I continue to support the organization that helped him so much throughout his diagnosis and journey with ALS. We have honored that wish with many fundraising efforts including the most popular Falmouth Road Race. This year, I am reaching a little higher and running a little further.

CCALS uses the funds they raise to provide services, support and equipment to ALS patients and their families. Their main goal is to help them maintain peace and dignity throughout their battle. I was able to witness first hand the incredible work of CCALS and the difference their efforts make in not only the lives of those living with ALS, but their families and caregivers. My uncle and our family would not have made it as far and long as we did without the support of this amazing group. It is my privilege and honor to continue to give back and help make a difference in the lives of those still fighting ALS.

I learned so much from my Uncle Doug as he navigated through his last years of life with a disease for which there is a poor prognosis and currently no cure. One of the most important lessons came when he was quoted saying, “Let’s do whatever it is we are talking about doing and not wait until tomorrow.”

Running the Boston Marathon has been on my bucket list for a few years now and I am finally taking Uncle Doug’s famous advice. Thanks to Compassionate Care ALS and the family of Matt Bruce for this opportunity to achieve my goal while honoring one of my favorite people and raising money for my favorite cause.

I hope to one day be writing one of these passages to all of you with the news that a cure has been found for ALS, but until then, I continue to ask for your generosity and support as I continue to fight (and run!) for those still living with this terrible disease and carry on the legacy that my Uncle Doug started.

Thank you so very much! xo
