They organized a benefit swim earlier in the summer and chose the seemingly innocuous date of Aug. 27 at 9:30am. As Irene approached, the checked the weather forecasts and decided to go ahead.

They were forced to cancel the official event Friday. But, somehow, 55 people appeared at Dr. Garber’s waterfront house at 9am Saturday. They swam about 50 yards along the shore.

The swim raised more than $5,000 for Compasionate Care ALS, the organization that has helped Dr. Garber and his family.

The watch has begun for stormy weather Aug. 19, 2012. The group plans the second annual David’s Old Silver Swim Aug. 18.
